Florida's climate is ideal for cultivating a wide range of crops. Major crops grown in the state include citrus fruits, sugar cane, tomatoes, peppers, cotton, watermelons, peanuts, beans, and potatoes. Timber is also an important agricultural product. In 1993, the insurance company Kemper National Services opened operations in Plantation and the following year, announced plans to double its office space and hire up to 800 additional employees.Plantation is located in the center of Broward County and is bordered by Lauderhill to the northeast, Sunrise to the north and west, Davie to the south, and Fort Lauderdale to the east.
After his election in 1905, Napoleon Bonaparte Broward, Jennings' successor, appointed him as general counsel of the Internal Improvement Fund and continued the initiative to completely drain the Everglades (a central theme of his election campaign). While the results in the Everglades were mixed, drainage enabled the development of much of today's urban Broward County, first as agricultural land and later as residential.In the years following the original agreement, contract negotiations turned into legal battles between Everglades Plantation Company and internal improvement managers. A new county statute gave Broward government broad powers to monitor and improve quality of life and environment. The Everglades Plantation Company was founded in January 1909 after Adam A.
signed a two-year contract with trustees of Internal Improvement Fund.Citizens and leaders had united in their desire to make sure that land that was previously unfit for human habitation would not become uninhabitable again. All three predate Broward County itself, which was formed from parts of Dade and Palm Beach Counties in 1915 and was named after former Florida governor Napoleon Bonaparte Broward. In less than a century, a land unfit for human habitation has become a permanent home for nearly two million people and winter residence for tens of thousands more. This growth has changed Broward County forever, and agriculture has had to adapt to change and evolve in order to be sustainable.The story of man in Broward County can go back even further, although we have no firm evidence.
Courts have emphasized that “land use as of January 1 of the year in question is the standard of land classification”, and “agricultural” use is now and has always been the test. Work on a new city-owned golf course began in 2002 when city purchased property of original Plantation golf course and began new development called “Plantation Preserve”. The Broward County Property Appraiser's Office is required by law to classify all properties in county as agricultural or non-agricultural.
