The Plantation System has had a huge influence on the development of Broward County, FL. In 1976, the construction industry began to recover, raising worries that the uncontrolled and sometimes reckless growth of the past would be repeated. To prevent this, the approval of the 1977 Land Use Plan was a crucial step in limiting urban expansion and making sure that the area's resources were safeguarded and used in the best way. This was followed by the establishment of Broward County in 1915, which was named after former Florida Governor Napoleon Bonaparte Broward.
The population of Broward County experienced a peak percentage change of 297.9%, increasing from 83,933 in 1950 to 333,946 in 1960. This was due to the canal system implemented by Broward, which helped keep existing built-up areas high and dry. The county government was given broad powers to monitor and improve the quality of life and the environment. The Broward County Library is one of the largest public library systems in the country and has 38 branches. In 2002, work began on a new city-owned golf course called “Plantation Preserve”.
This was located on the property of the original Plantation golf course. Plantation is situated in the center of Broward County and is bordered by Lauderhill to the northeast, Sunrise to the north and west, Davie to the south, and Fort Lauderdale to the east. During the celebration of the bicentennial of the United States in 1976, a 45-foot oak tree was planted in Fifth Street Park in Plantation to represent the Tree of Liberty. The original inhabitants at the time of European contact were the Tequestas, who controlled much of southeastern Florida including what is now Miami-Dade County, Broward County and southern Palm Beach County. Hurricane Andrew caused a mass exodus from South Dade to Broward County, filling Pembroke Pines and other Broward communities with tens of thousands of transplanted families. The insurance company Kemper National Services first opened operations in Plantation in 1993 and announced plans to double its office space in the city and hire up to 800 additional employees.
While drainage enabled development of much of today's urban Broward County, it also had mixed results in the Everglades. The Plantation System has had a major impact on Broward County's growth and development over time. From its establishment in 1915 to its current status as one of Florida's most populous counties, Broward has been shaped by its unique history and geography. The county's canal system has allowed for urban expansion while protecting existing built-up areas from flooding. The county government has also taken steps to ensure that resources are used responsibly and that quality of life is maintained.
The Plantation Preserve golf course is an example of how this commitment to responsible growth can be achieved while still preserving natural beauty.
