Plantation is a major hub in South Florida, renowned for its excellent workforce, easy access to major highways, and a 15-minute drive to Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Port Everglades. The Broward County Charter was established to divide the legislative and administrative functions of government. Colonel James Gadsden conducted the first survey of the area in 1825, but was not particularly impressed. All three predate Broward County itself, which was formed from parts of Dade and Palm Beach Counties in 1915 and named after former Florida governor Napoleon Bonaparte Broward.
After its formation, Broward County experienced a tremendous surge in development, with the opening of the first tourist hotel in Fort Lauderdale in 1919. The new county charter granted the Broward government broad powers to monitor and improve the quality of life and environment. The SBA opened a business recovery center in Broward County to help Floridians apply for loans in case of disaster. In 1915, Palm Beach and Dade counties contributed nearly equal portions of land to create Broward County. Hurricane Andrew caused a mass exodus from South Dade to Broward County, filling Pembroke Pines and other Broward communities with tens of thousands of transplanted families. The Tequestas were the inhabitants at the time of the first European contact, controlling much of southeastern Florida, including what is now Miami-Dade County, Broward County and the southern part of Palm Beach County. Broward's population saw a peak percentage change of 297.9%, rising from 83,933 in 1950 to 333,946 in 1960.
In 1925, the boom was considered to have peaked, but the 1926 Miami hurricane caused an economic depression in the county. This project was made possible by partnerships between the state of Florida, the city of Plantation, the Fort Lauderdale Metropolitan Area Alliance and Broward County. This allowed for the development of much of today's urban Broward County, first as agricultural land and later as residential. The structure of Broward County government was signed into law in 1975 with the approval of the Broward County statutes.
